Background of the Study
Digital code‑switching, the practice of alternating between languages within digital communication, is a prevalent feature in Nigeria’s multilingual society. In platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook, users fluidly interchange between indigenous languages and English to express identity, emotion, and contextual meaning (Adetayo, 2023). This study evaluates digital code‑switching practices by examining the nuances of language alternation in private messaging versus public posts. WhatsApp, with its intimate and instantaneous conversational style, often prompts spontaneous code‑switching that reflects personal identity and situational informality. In contrast, Facebook posts, characterized by a broader audience and more structured content, tend to exhibit more deliberate language mixing, balancing cultural pride with professional communication (Oluwaseun, 2024). These differences highlight how technological affordances and social expectations shape language use. The study explores the triggers, frequency, and functions of code‑switching, analyzing its role in enhancing communicative effectiveness and cultural representation in digital spaces. By comparing these two platforms, the research aims to reveal how varying degrees of formality and audience influence the deployment of multiple languages in online discourse (Ibrahim, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite widespread code‑switching in Nigerian digital communication, there is insufficient comparative research that examines its manifestations across platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook. Current literature often treats code‑switching as a homogenous phenomenon, overlooking how the context of communication—private versus public—affects language alternation strategies. This gap hinders our ability to understand the socio-cultural and technological factors that drive digital bilingualism. The lack of systematic analysis of these differences limits insights into how users negotiate identity and contextual meaning in diverse online settings. This study addresses the need for a detailed investigation into the triggers and functions of code‑switching in different social media environments, thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of digital multilingual practices (Adeniyi, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To examine code‑switching patterns in Nigerian WhatsApp and Facebook posts.

  • To compare the triggers and contexts for language alternation on both platforms.

  • To assess the impact of code‑switching on digital identity formation.

Research Questions

  • What are the prevalent code‑switching practices on WhatsApp and Facebook?

  • How do contextual factors influence language alternation on these platforms?

  • What is the effect of code‑switching on users’ digital identity?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative evaluation of digital code‑switching in Nigerian social media, providing insights into how different platforms shape multilingual communication. The findings will enhance our understanding of the role of technology in language use and inform strategies for effective communication in a multilingual society. This research benefits linguists, educators, and media practitioners by elucidating the interplay between digital contexts and language identity, thereby contributing to the broader field of sociolinguistics (Chukwu, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms
